The award for decent reporting on poverty and social exclusion is given for journalistic works and media photographs that address the issue of poverty and social exclusion in Serbia, and have been published in print, electronic, or online media of national, regional, and local significance. The aim of the Award for Decent Reporting is to promote dignified and non-sensationalist reporting on poverty, which portrays various aspects and forms of poverty, with respect for representing individuals living in poverty and involves a deeper observation of the phenomenon of poverty and its patterns.

The final conference of the project “Strengthening resilience of older persons and persons with disabilities during COVID-19 and future disasters” was held in the Palace of Serbia. The conference was organized as the final event of the project coordinated by the Red Cross of Serbia since November 2020, with the support of the European Union and the Austrian Development Agency.

At the discussion forum entitled “Empowerment of women workers in assistant jobs”, the findings of a rapid assessment of the “Position and challenges of women workers in cleaning and care services in Serbia” were presented by Jovana Čvorić, a researcher with the SeConS Development Initiative Group. The forum was organized by ASTRA – Anti-Trafficking Action organization and the Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung Southeast Europe Foundation.

The Global Compact Network Serbia members convened for their first meeting in 2024 to discuss the Network’s strategic goals and upcoming activities. A portion of the meeting was also devoted to deliberating on the similarities and differences between the ESG concept and the Sustainable Development Goals, and the significance of their integration in the pursuit of sustainable development. This was also an opportunity to learn more about the new members and the sustainable practices they follow.

SeConS Development Initiative Group and the Department of Art and Design of the Belgrade Business and Arts Academy of Applied Studies have entered into an agreement on cooperation that will enable students in Basic and Master Applied Studies to present and publish in SeConS publications their signature watermark photographs created as part of their course work in Photography.

UNICEF in Serbia conducted additional analysis of the MICS survey from 2019, but also using available data collected through the previous MICS surveys (2005, 2010, 2014). Experts from the SeConS Development Initiative Group participated in MICS6 – Secondary analyses.

The Gender Equality Index is a unique measuring instrument important for monitoring the progress of gender equality in various areas of society, not only in the EU but also among the Western Balkans and Turkey. It facilitates a comparison at the regional level among EU member states, candidate countries, and potential candidates.

Prof. Marija Babović, PhD, director of the SeConS programme, spoke on the topic of “Gender equality in Serbia: concepts, situation, and policies” and the executive director of SeConS Olivera Vuković gave a presentation on “Programmes of social and economic support for rural women”.

How was a system of taxes and social benefits created on the foundations of neoliberal ideology in the early 2000s, leading to a significant deterioration in the relative position of the lower classes? What is the current state of poverty and social exclusion according to the most recent SILC data? What characterizes intergenerational mobility in Serbia, and how could inheritance and gift tax reform encourage this mobility? Is there a need for a thorough reform of labor taxation?

On the occasion of the International Day of Older Persons, SeConS Executive Director Olivera Vuković attended the “Celebrating Life” conference in Sarajevo, where she addressed Access to long-term care services in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
