The European Anti-Poverty Network Serbia, in collaboration with the “Journalism-prize goes international” initiative and with the support of the ERSTE Foundation, granted the National Award “REFLEKSIJA” for exemplary reporting on poverty and social exclusion throughout 2023-2024.
The objective of the award is to encourage the dissemination of responsible and objective reporting on poverty, highlighting its various dimensions and manifestations. It also ensures the fair portrayal of those living in poverty and delves into a comprehensive analysis of the phenomenon and its underlying causes. This award is unique since the jury that assessed the works consisted solely of those who have firsthand experience of poverty and social exclusion, such as jobless youth, persons with disabilities, members of national minorities, beneficiaries of social services, etc.
The award was bestowed upon female journalists in the subsequent categories: Print/Online Media: Dunja Karanović (LICEULICE – Age and gender discrimination in the labor market), TV feature story: Olivera Miloš Todorović (RTS – Children with no address), radio feature story: Slavica Trifunović (Mašina.rs – Tradition remains more powerful than legislation) photography in the media/graphics: Sanja Stojkov (LICEULICE – Age and gender discrimination in the labor market). Several journalists were awarded special certificates of appreciation for the high quality of the works they submitted and the significance of the subjects they addressed.
During the Award Ceremony, Smiljana Milinkov, a professor at the Faculty of Philosophy in Novi Sad, delivered a presentation on the Analysis of Media Reporting on Poverty and Social Exclusion. Milica Stević, a researcher from the SeConS Development Initiative Group, presented the Poverty Watch report for the year 2023. The Ceremony featured a public reading of stories from the collection “Our stories are your compass,” developed with the help of individuals confronted with obstacles in psychosocial functioning. The narratives recount their personal experiences and the methods by which they surmounted the crises and obstacles they encountered in the community.
