The “1 in 5 million” protest, also known as “Stop the Bloody Shirts,” began in 2018 in response to violence against members of the Serbian Left. Although these political protests are not the only ones that have taken place in the last few years, they certainly stand out because of their mass, duration and spread across all major cities in Serbia. As with the Protest Against Dictatorship held in 2017, the SeConS team conducted a survey with protest participants.
SeConS – Development Initiative Group with the support of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, conducted a survey of “1 in 5 million” civic protests in Belgrade. The research was conducted in order to answer the questions of who is participating in the civil protests and why, what political option is supported by the participants and what the protesters want to achieve. The results of conducted research indicated that the most common motives for joining the protests are media freedom, corruption of the government, and unresolved issues such as unemployment, poverty and youth leaving.
